How to set up Push-to-Talk in Mumble

Mumble can be triggered to send your voice in a number of ways. It can send a continuous stream of audio data, it can send just audio data that meets a "voice activity" threshold, or it can send audio data only when you press a Push-to-Talk key.

For the purposes of raiding with Gypsies, it is strongly suggested that you use Push-to-Talk (or PTT) mode. A continuous stream means we hear everything that's happening at your place, and a voice activity threshold will still send audio when there are loud noises in the background, when you cough or sneeze, or even sometimes when you're just breathing, which will quickly get on the nerves of your co-raiders. Setting Mumble to PTT mode means you're only transmitting what you actually want to transmit, when you're actually talking.

There are two ways to set up PTT mode in Mumble. The first is to run through the Audio Setup Wizard and select PTT mode (and your PTT hotkey) there. If you followed the How to Install and Set Up Mumble guide in this forum, then you will have already done this.

However, if you need to manually set up Push-to-Talk mode, here's how to do it:

  1. Open up your Mumble configuration (Configure ⇒ Settings, or your Preferences on a Mac), and select the Audio Input tab.

  2. In the Transmission section, set your Transmit to Push To Talk.

  3. Click on the Shortcuts tab, and click the Add button to add a new shortcut, if there isn't one there.

  4. Set the Function of the new shortcut from Unassigned...

    ...to Push-to-Talk.

  5. Click the Shortcut field next to the Push-to-Talk function to be prompted for the key you wish to use to trigger PTT.

  6. Press the key you'd like to use for your Push-to-Talk (it's Right-Control, in this example).

  7. Press OK to save your settings.

When selecting a PTT key, you should select a modifier key such as one of your Control, Alt, or Shift keys, so that you can hold down the key for an extended amount of time while talking without the computer beeping at you. Some Gypsies also find it very convenient to use a foot pedal as their Push-to-Talk key.

Also be sure to unbind that key from any function in World of Warcraft so that there's no overlap.
